Suddenly understanding Twitter and knowing how to build a following is being viewed not just as a plus for applicants to some jobs, but as a requirement (as found here):
This is an excerpt from a BestBuy job posting… specifically for the Sr. Manager for Emerging Media Marketing:
Basic Qualifications:
o Bachelors degree Liberal Arts, Marketing, Interactive Marketing, New Media, Business Administration or related
o 2 plus years of mobile or social media marketing experience at an Agency director level, strategist level, or brand interactive director level
o 4 plus years People or resource leadership experience
o 1 plus years of active blogging experience
Preferred Qualifications:
o Graduate degree
o 250 plus followers on TwitterBoth blogging experience and twitter followers required…

This reminds me a little of this scene from Desperate Housewives:
A strong Twitter following will never replace other important qualifications like actual business knowledge and industry specific expertise- but it’s interesting to see it recognized.
